Let me introduce Julia...
How did you get into painting?
I have always painted first at school and then a hobby, I met the professor of art at Southampton University in my early 30s, he quite literally thought me everything and guided my art practice towards a unique style.
What is your favourite part of the process?
My favourite moments would include teaching and those moments when students realise they can do it too!
Who's work inspires you?
Artists that inspire would include Sorollo, Singer Seargent, and most of the impressionists, living artists would include Haidee Jo Summers, Michael Ashcroft, Anthony Eyton and the likes of Andrew James.
What was your biggest art disaster?
I don’t really have disasters, failed paintings can be part of the process but with oils you just scrape back. Disasters might include getting paint on my feet then paddling through the house! I have ruined many a new jumper though!
What is your favourite subject matter?
Ooh subjects, that’s tricky because I enjoy so many, anything however with good light and shade or contrast… perhaps a shaded pathway in a wood.
What is your favourite piece?
Two paintings stand out - ‘Big Country’ a very large oil painting (prints available) of horses which was sold many years ago… just one of those paintings where everything went well and just took a few days to paint.
The other was my winning piece this year at Weardale Plein Air Festival of Alliums which was picked out by one of my favourite artist Michael Ashcroft ROI and will be submitted to the exhibition this year which I hope might be accepted.
